About

I am a physician trained at Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Chandigarh, one of India's leading teaching hospitals, where I ranked 3rd in a class of 150 in my first professional examinations and held a four-year academic merit scholarship. I am a certified BLS and ACLS provider through the American Heart Association.

My academic focus is clinical pharmacology and drug safety. Working with the pharmacology research group at GMCH, I have co-authored five peer-reviewed reviews and studies spanning gastroenterology, transplant pulmonology, neuro-immunology, and clinical pharmacology. My first-author project compared the risk of new-onset diabetes between PCSK9 inhibitors and statins, which I presented as an oral talk at the British Pharmacological Society's Pharmacology 2024 meeting in Harrogate, United Kingdom.

Beyond research, I care deeply about community medicine. I have led menstrual-hygiene education for young girls, organised blood- and eye-donation drives, and served as Editor-in-Chief of my regional adolescent-health newsletter. I am now pursuing further clinical training, with a focus on internal medicine and clinical pharmacology.

Integrating clinical pharmacology and artificial intelligence: potential benefits, challenges, and role of clinical pharmacologists

Singh H, Nim DK, Randhawa AS, Ahluwalia S
Expert Review of Clinical Pharmacology 2024 · 17(4):381–391

A review of how artificial intelligence, spanning machine learning, natural language processing, deep learning, and reinforcement learning, can accelerate drug discovery and development, precision medicine, and pharmacovigilance, and how the role of the clinical pharmacologist is evolving alongside the associated ethical and implementation challenges.

The Efficacy of Probiotics in the Management of Helicobacter pylori: A Systematic Review

Penumetcha SS, Ahluwalia S, Irfan R, Khan SA, Rohit Reddy S, Vasquez Lopez ME, Zahid M, Busmail A, Mohammed L
Cureus 2021 · 13(12):e20483 Open Access

With antibiotic resistance eroding H. pylori eradication rates, this PRISMA-guided systematic review synthesizes evidence on probiotics as an adjunct or alternative therapy. Probiotics alone did not raise eradication rates, but added to standard regimens they gave a mild improvement and, notably, significantly reduced antibiotic side effects.

A Systematic Review on Pulmonary Complications Secondary to Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation

Busmail A, Penumetcha SS, Ahluwalia S, Irfan R, Khan SA, Rohit Reddy S, Vasquez Lopez ME, Zahid M, Mohammed L
Cureus 2022 · 14(5):e24807 Open Access

A systematic review synthesizing evidence on the infectious and non-infectious pulmonary complications that follow hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, from bronchiolitis obliterans to diffuse alveolar hemorrhage and pulmonary hypertension, to help physicians recognize and manage a serious yet under-discussed area.

Tumor Necrosis Factor Alpha Blockade and Multiple Sclerosis: Exploring New Avenues

Zahid M, Busmail A, Penumetcha SS, Ahluwalia S, Irfan R, Khan SA, Rohit Reddy S, Vasquez Lopez ME, Mohammed L
Cureus 2021 · 13(10):e18847 Open Access

A review of why non-selective TNF-α inhibitors failed, and even worsened, multiple sclerosis, and how the discovery that TNF signals through two opposing receptors (TNFR1, which drives demyelination and apoptosis; TNFR2, which promotes remyelination and neuroprotection) reframed the target. It focuses on atrosab, a selective TNFR1-blocking antibody that reduced symptom severity in animal models of MS.
